Jason has also adapted the game system to be more swashbuckling than the normal d20 system so that people who like the more story driven systems like White Wolf’s d10 system will be more at home. Some of our players wanted to stay to the hard core d20 rules, but after playing the more free form version we stuck with that. Our first night was a blast. We didn’t have to worry about how many “attacks of opportunity” or “how many squares you can move” we just got into the action and played.

Customize, Customize, Customize

I think if any one element of the game system really stands out, it is the ability to customize. And by customize I mean everything! Each of the character classes use only a single advancement table. Each class has its own attributes, but they are not pre-defined as far as when you get what. You know how you usually had to wait until an exact level to start casting spells with your Ranger, or you had to be such and such a level to get specific powers with your familiar? In the Blood Legacy setting your character gets so many character points from level to level. Your advancement is up to you. You want to increase your Base Attack Bonus faster than normal, its your choice. You want to concentrate on a specific spell and make it more powerful, that is your choice as well.

Not only can you purchase attributes from your character class every level, but each race has specific attributes that can be purchased as you go. A good example is with the Fey. All Fey Nobles have wings, but some develop and use them more than others. Thus you can spend your Character Points on the ability to fly, which makes you a faster and more agile flyer than your friends.

Character Points can be mixed and matched so you can spend them on Racial and Class attributes as you choose.

The other option for your Character Points is to purchase special powers through the use of Flesh Runes, special tattoos that endow your character with magical abilities. The thing is with tattoos as is with all the Attributes, is that you can purchase them in ranks. Thus someone may have the same tattoo or Attribute that you have, but with lesser or greater power.

All in all I would have to say it is the ability to customize your character every level that makes the game so fun. I have never had so much fun creating a character and let me tell you that most of the people in our group loved leveling up.

Magic

I can’t forget to mention the magic rules. All magic deals damage in d6’s. At first some of the players didn’t like this. But as we played and I should them the special magic rule they all agreed. Magical damage is open ended and every time you roll a 6 you get to pick it up and roll again, adding it to the total. This means that you want to have a magical weapon, either enchanted or made of magical material. Even the toughest combatants can be taken out with a lucky shot. Makes for a much more enjoyable (quick paced) game.

In closing

You know it’s hard to describe everything here. Do yourself a favor and pick up the book. One of my players didn’t want anything to do with playtesting but now they won’t play anything else. The system works so that you can put anything from the other d20 games into the mix. I could go on forever
